A Number of Hurt as Turbulence Strikes Delta Flight Landing at Sydney, Australia

A number of individuals sustained injuries following a Delta Airlines jet from Los Angeles to Sydney experienced rough air on Friday morning.

Delta Flight 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it landed at the Sydney airport, a company official stated. Several cabin crew members were injured.

Local paramedics reported they evaluated a total of five people, and took three to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included back pain and headaches. The injured spanned from their 30s to 70s.

It is the newest example of commercial jets experiencing turbulence, with experts indicating that climate change is a significant contributor.

On board were 245 passengers and 15 crew members on the Airbus A350, the representative noted, adding that the plane arrived "without further incident" at the airport at 06:48 local time on Friday.

The NSW Ambulance Service said they received a call just three minutes prior to the plane landed, and response teams were standing by on the runway.

The reasons turbulence is becoming more frequent - and more severe.

During the past year, two dozen individuals sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines flight, flying from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, hit "significant" turbulence just a couple of hours into the transoceanic journey, and diverted for an emergency landing.

In 2024, those on board on a certain international flight endured a terrifying brief five-second of severe turbulence. An individual lost their life and numerous people sustained injuries, as those without seatbelts were thrown from their seats and were slammed back.

In-flight turbulence is fairly routine during flights, and while cases of rough conditions appear to be increasing, they are still very rare.

Research indicates that there are an estimated 5,000 incidents of significant in-flight disturbance each year, out of a total of over 35 million journeys that now take off around the world.

Severe turbulence is categorized as when the sudden jolts of a jet passing through rough air masses apply greater than 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - enough to lift you out of your seat if you were not fastened by a seatbelt.

As climate change shifts the conditions in the sky, researchers alert that commercial aviation could become bumpier: temperature changes and shifting wind patterns in the higher altitudes are expected to boost the occurrence and strength of severe turbulence.
