A comprehensive search and rescue mission is actively under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing sailing vessels loaded with aid cargo traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Naval Rescue Efforts Launched

Authorities in Mexico has sent navy personnel and search planes to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board a minimum of 9 sailors, according to a military release.

The vessels had been expected to arrive in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Relief to the Nation

The island nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation struggles through widespread national electricity failures.

"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are outfitted with suitable safety equipment and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy stated.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their consular staff.

"We are collaborating completely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Previous Aid Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the country.

That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, medicines, infant formula, bikes and provisions.

Wider Political Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.

International organizations have since warned of ""severe" lack of essential goods, with in excess of fifty thousand operations called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Political measures have intensified in recent months, with statements from various leaders emphasizing the complex nature of diplomatic ties.

Reacting to previous statements, a high-ranking official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains not publicly known.

The Mexican navy said it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its reach to find the vessels and guarantee the safety of the crews.

At this time, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
