The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
