The adjudicated coup-monger – who had been subject to house arrest in his residence while a series of judicial steps and petitions proceed – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the coming days, amidst growing rumors that he will be transferred to a well-known top-security prison.

Historical Statements on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s long public life, the conservative ex- soldier exhibited little mercy for the country's prison population.

“Why should we give those lowlifes a good life?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be messed, period. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to wind up there, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Destination Speculation

Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, four of whom this week toured the complex in an apparent bid to dissuade the supreme court from transferring him there.

Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, stated he expected the 70-year-old politician to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe gut issues – the outcome of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 presidential campaign – signified it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is extremely serious. He cannot to cope if they send him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” said the senator, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

Nobody wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to receive respectful treatment – but respectful handling behind bars. He must not continue being his self-appointed guard for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years applauding the harsh handling of inmates, had suddenly woken up to their entitlements. “Only now has the extreme right – which has always argued that civil liberties were not for lawbreakers – opted to visit a penitentiary to discover what conditions are really like,” he said.

“He is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, degrading handling”.

Potential Prison Environment

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now holds about 14,000 detainees, his expected location looks to be a close prison for police officers and other “special” detainees known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).
