Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was āupbeatā during a recent discussion.
āWhat reassures me, is that heās feeling positive,ā Glenn commented. āHis wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.ā
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
āNot certain at the moment,ā he added. āBut I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.ā
New York police shared surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts āa great dealā since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
āThe first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,ā Glenn remarked. āAnd Iām thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And thatās the only thing that really went through my mind.
āThereās a process to this, which I wonāt get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.ā
Boyd was inactive this season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
āHeās been a part of what weāre doing,ā Glenn commented. āI mean, he comes to the games all the time. Heās fully engaged. As one of the leagueās best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.ā
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houstonās squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
