Monarch to Deliver First-Hand Message on Illness in Nationwide Programme

King Charles has taped a first-hand account about his journey with cancer, which will be broadcast as part of this year's annual cancer awareness campaign, run by a leading cancer charity and Channel 4.

Buckingham Palace said the King would reflect on his "healing process" as a person living with the disease, in a recorded address on Friday at 20:00 GMT.

The recording, taped inside his London residence recently, will stress the importance of routine screenings to ensure more people catch the illness at an initial point.

This represents a infrequent public commentary on the medical condition of the Monarch, who has been receiving ongoing care since revealing his diagnosis in early last year. Analysts suggest unlikely the King will disclose his particular diagnosis.

Awareness Central Purpose

The Stand Up To Cancer campaign each year generates donations for clinical trials and therapies and urges people to get check-ups to improve the chances of an early diagnosis.

The King's relative openness about his health challenge, and living with cancer, has been aimed to raise awareness and to persuade more people to get checked - and this will be advanced with this unusual personal contribution.

Up until now the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to maintain his duties, upholding a full diary alongside his ongoing course of care, and he is understood not to have wanted to be overshadowed by his condition.

Recently has seen the 77-year-old Monarch, taking several international tours, including to Italy and Canada, and receiving the largest volume of official guests to the UK for decades, including the German president last week.

Charity Special Show

The upcoming Stand Up to Cancer broadcast on the network, hosted by well-known figures such as Davina McCall, Adam Hills and Clare Balding, will appeal to people not to be frightened of getting health screenings.

All three have been personally touched by cancer - McCall said recently she had received treatment for breast cancer, while Balding was overcame the illness over a decade ago. Comedian Adam Hills has previously discussed his father, who had a diagnosis and then later leukaemia.

The show will appeal to the roughly millions of people in the UK who health organisations state are not current with NHS screening schemes, with an website to let people check if they are qualified for tests for several common cancers.

In an effort to clarify cancer checks and demonstrate the benefit of early diagnosis there will be a direct feed from hospital departments at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.

"The goal is to take the fear surrounding preventative tests and show everyone that they are not isolated in this," stated one of the hosts.

Understanding Screening Programmes

Currently in the UK, there are three publicly available checks - for bowel, breast and cervical cancer - available to eligible individuals.

A new lung cancer screening programme is also being slowly rolled out for individuals at high risk of developing the disease, primarily aimed at people aged 55-74 years old, who are smokers or were former smokers.

Individuals may discuss specific tests, but there is lacking a standardised service in place.

Funding Research

The Stand Up to Cancer campaign, which has collected over one hundred million pounds for many years, is supporting multiple medical projects encompassing 13,000 patients.

His Majesty, in a message for guests at a reception for cancer charities in April, had discussed acknowledging the "daunting and at times frightening situation" for those diagnosed and their support networks.

But he stated his first-hand encounter of living with cancer had shown him that "the darkest moments of sickness can be illuminated by the kindness of others," as he thanked those who looked after individuals with the illness.

The Palace has not made public the nature of cancer the King has, or what treatment he has undergone. The King's cancer was detected after he had had a routine operation.
