The vehicles for the 2026 season are designed to be lighter, more agile and sustainable than this year.

F1 has introduced the official language that will be used to explain the technical complexities of its revolutionary 2026 technical rules.

The championship is introducing what is considered the largest technical shift in its illustrious history for the 2026 campaign, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the mandatory use of 100% sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher battery power, requiring key advancements in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

Over a race distance, competitors will strategically manage ERS energy – including during flying laps – to achieve the peak performance.

Extensive fan consultation were conducted with a wide range of fans, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which terminology would improve understanding of the main elements of the new regulations.

The stated goal was to make a set of intricate technical aspects of the sport as easy to grasp as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, older technical labels for some systems – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the moveable wings – have been phased out in favor of straightforward terms that clearly indicate the real-world effect of the system.

Exploring the New Tech

According to rule-makers that racers will have greater control to choose strategies regarding power usage, harvesting, and saving energy.

The 2026 rules introduce a range of settings that will be shown on broadcast screens to improve the fans' insight of the strategic duel.

  • Attack Mode: This supersedes the current DRS. It provides a surge of additional ERS power accessible when a competitor is less than a second the vehicle in front to assist with an pass.
  • Power Mode: This is a manual power boost from the ERS that can be utilized during overtaking or defending. It delivers the pilot maximum power at the push of a button.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be used with calculation, as the available electrical charge is strictly limited.

  • Active Aero: Both the front and rear wings adjust their angles – opening on the long straight sections for low aerodynamic resistance and top speed, and closing in the bends for optimal cornering performance.
  • Battery Recharge: Drivers can replenish their battery with regenerative braking, or during throttle lift at the straight's end or in sections where only partial power is required.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The vehicles for the new era will be more compact and lighter than this year, with a car length reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight reduced by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately a significant margin, although teams will undoubtedly recover some as they refine their designs.

Drag has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will feature active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will move on the straights to reduce drag and increase straightline speed and click back into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will retain 18-inch wheel rims, but the rubber compounds will be reduced in width, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30mm at the rear.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The new power units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in energy output by the internal combustion engine and the electrical system, up from about one-fifth electric power under present rules.

The hybrid system is made less complex through the deletion of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the intricate and expensive device that generated electricity from the turbo.

All vehicles will be mandated to operate on fully sustainable fuel, produced using plant-based materials or synthetic industrial processes.
