Senegal's Emerging Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
As I enter the space, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. It’s a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals
With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
