Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria

Armed conflict at learning center
Educational institutions in northern Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for armed groups

Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.

The gang of attackers breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, authorities reported.

The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.

Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Local residents disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.

In recent years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Security crisis in northern Nigeria has escalated dramatically in recent months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the violence.
