The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Campy Joy – However It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

An new initialism emerged a few months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts such as paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to attend to a young patient who has lost their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that genocidal acts are still being committed. Authorities rejects these allegations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is charged with. But while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, apparently, is what international harmony manifests as.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that global media are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that initially championed peace has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
