We are analyzing images and video shared earlier today that show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
