US Armed Forces Conducts Deadly Attack in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in Four Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking defense official, the American armed forces executed a lethal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Surveillance verified the vessel was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. All four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Background and Prior Actions
The statement follows a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Actions Amidst Pressure
The administration has encountered increasing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a successful operation, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a senior aide appeared to confirm a wider geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “aims to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This indicates the military campaign may be part of a push to remove Venezuela's current government.
